The Oasis

The Guidance and Counseling Department of Holy Childhood High School had long desired a Room where classes could be held. Eventually our Principal Sister Maxine McIntosh, FMS identified a small classroom that would be used exclusively for the purpose of Guidance and Counselling. Unfortunately that classroom room was not able to facilitate classes, but it was suggested to our Principal that it could be used as a Therapy Centre. Knowledge gained in the Master of Science in Counselling and Social Work Programme, and particularly the Art and Play Therapy Programme, birthed the concept of the Oasis – a Therapy Centre; which was officially opened on June 13, 2013.

Art and Play therapy is an intervention that, as Guidance Counsellors, we recognized could be applied to the numerous mal-adaptive behaviours which were being exhibited among some of our students. At first, some students rejected the idea of going to the Oasis. They mistakenly thought it was a room for ‘mad persons,’ but we encouraged them nonetheless to see it in a positive light. Students with anger problems, grief, and trauma situations were, and continue to be engaged in the Oasis by way of multi modal interventions including -but not limited to - sand play, art, relaxation techniques and consultation to provide proper social functioning.

During Peace Week (2014), the Department organized and conducted anger management group therapy. This proved to be very successful, and those students who benefitted from the therapy were commissioned as “Proponents of Peace.” Later, with the able assistance of the Visual Art Department, the Oasis was transformed into a user friendly room that attracted not only troubled children, but everyone.
This initiative has received high commendation from the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, and was selected by the Association as a “Best Practice” at its annual Conference in 2014.

Resources for the Oasis, have been made possible though our Principal Sister Maxine McIntosh FMS, the Parent Teachers Association, and members of the Alumnae Association. There is still a need for added resources and the Guidance Department will greatly appreciate the support. The Counsellors continue to seek opportunities in an effort to enhance our skills in the use of interventions which will bring about transformation in the lives of our students and other stakeholders.
